After failing 17 times in Congress this year, the wind industry finally got to celebrate the renewal of the Production Tax Credits which were buried in the text of the much debated, but ultimately approved, financial "rescue" bill.
It's well known that without heavy taxpayer support, wind power is just not profitable or cost-efficient. Apparently, the wind industry and the financial sector have a lot in common.

Wind energy is the answer to our energy problems!! H.R. 6, the Energy Policy Act of 2003, contains massive new subsidies for the coal industry. In total, the energy legislation will provide more than $9.3 billion in new tax breaks and spending programs for the coal industry. Almost all of the subsidies benefit so-called “clean coal” technologies. The United States burns more than 900 million tons of coal annually, releasing more than 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide and 51 tons of mercury into our air and water. In southern West Virginia alone, 15 to 25 percent of the mountaintops have been removed to mine coal. Mountaintop removal has buried 1,000 miles of streams and eliminated 30,000 acres of hard wood forests. Coal is all we get for electricity in Taos now. Coal is killing us all. I say PLEASE build a wind farm here and save Taos, save the planet!!
I share your concerns about coal, and other fossil fuels, as well. That's why wind power makes no sense. For every megawatt of wind power produced, an equal amount of "conventional" power must be made available as a base load. England, with more wind turbines per capita than the US, has had to build even MORE coal plants to -- you guessed it -- supplement their wind energy. Makes no sense at all!
